A trio of officers perished and at least 15 additional individuals got wounded in a seemingly intentional blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The blast was triggered as police and firefighters entered the house near Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the location and one more individual who fled subsequent to the incident was apprehended shortly later. The trio have been taken to hospital.

The detonation could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the scene revealed the building turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” said the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to remove the three family members in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The head of the Veneto region, the regional head, explained the farmhouse was subject to an court order due to financial obligations accrued by the siblings.

Negotiators had been sent to engage the family members who had secured themselves into the home. When the police arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the siblings set off the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Commander Papagno told reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the explosion precisely impacted our officers,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also located at the site, the minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the explosion included an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three officers of the state police and a fire services member.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor thought the explosion had occurred on a story above the access point and stated to journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the explosion, he said members had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being opened”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, noting that the family members had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in commemorating the three officers who had died in the performance of their duties.
