The loved ones of young people unaccounted for after a tragic fire at a bar in a Switzerland's ski resort are enduring an painful period of uncertainty for official news and requesting clues about their children via social media.
The blaze engulfed the a popular bar in the alpine resort, located in the mountains of south-west Switzerland, in the middle of the night of New Year's Day. Circulated footage depict the ceiling being engulfed in flames as beverages with sparklers are held aloft.
Emergency services have indicated that it could take days if not weeks to formally name the those who perished of the tragedy, which resulted in the death of 40 people and injured another over a hundred. Authorities noted on the latest update that 113 of the injured have been identified, with efforts continuing to identify the other six.
In the interim, families and friends have been taking to the internet to appeal for clues about their missing relatives who were at the bar that night.
The location of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, sixteen, are still unconfirmed, according to an appeal from his mother.
The resident of a town near Lausanne, informed a publication that she had returned to the city to check whether he was in the hospital, while his other parent did the same in Bern, but did not locate him.
"It feels like a terrible dream, an ordeal. Either I find my son in the morgue, or I find him in critical condition. Words cannot describe it," she told the paper.
She explained that some of his friends had been found with injuries covering nearly half their bodies. "It's unspeakable; they experienced an absolute nightmare."
The Italy's foreign ministry has indicated that a number of of its citizens have not been located.
Included in that group is Emanuele Galeppini, a teenage promising athlete, originally from Genoa but now living in Dubai.
The national sporting body has said that he is no longer with us, without mentioning the fire, honoring a "talented young man who embodied dedication and true sportsmanship."
His parent, is quoted as saying that his son was at the bar and was last in contact around the new year. An official spokesperson has indicated that a formal confirmation of his death is awaited.
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is likewise among the missing. His mother said that he had been on vacation but had ventured out with friends and found himself at the venue.
"Someone with him told me they ran away after the fire erupted and that he had his phone with him, but then at a certain point he couldn't see him anymore," she recounted, adding he had been wearing a distinctive gold chain.
One of his teachers commented, "I've always been struck by his good nature and smile, coupled with great responsibility. He would frequently ask if get me a coffee."
Alice Kallergis, who holds both Swiss and Greek nationality but lives full-time in the country, was also present on that night, according to media.
