One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a collection of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
Summers stated in a statement that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have served, enthusiastic about the prospects of the enterprise, and eagerly await following their development".
The former Harvard president, who once led the Ivy League institution, announced on recently that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his connections with Epstein.
The newly public communications showed that the economist communicated with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 apprehension for suspected sex trafficking of minors.
In additional comments, the AI firm said it understood Summers' choice to step down.
"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the perspective he provided to the directors," the organization commented.
This news arrives after the two houses of the legislative branch agreed on recently to endorse a measure that would mandate the federal prosecutors to release its records on the case.
The legislation will then head to the administration of the White House for signature. He has stated he plans to sign the measure, after modifying his view on the matter following pushback from his base.
A group of financier-linked emails released by the legislative panel days ago included several prominent individuals in the billionaire's former circle, without implying any criminal activity by those individuals.
The communications indicated that the economist and the financier regularly had dinners together, with he often trying to link Summers to notable world leaders.
After the emails were released with the public, he stated he accepted "complete accountability for my ill-advised judgment to persist in communicating with the financier".
He continued that he wanted "to reestablish confidence and repair connections with the individuals closest to me".
The economist served in high-level positions under party leaders; acting as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He led the institution from the early 2000s and is still a faculty member there. When declaring his withdrawal from public duties previously on Monday, he stated he would continue his teaching commitments.
Following his statement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a liberal think tank in Washington where Summers was a researcher, announced that Summers was not associated with the organization.
The former official joined the directorate of OpenAI, which develops ChatGPT, in last year - following a defeated move to replace its top executive OpenAI's head.
