Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives perished and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.

The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the moments before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain under care, with a number in a critical state. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
