The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th season, announced by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-part series created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast this spring, according to the production team.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."
The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been widespread ever since, but official word only arrived this week.
Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat misconduct within the police force.
Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case so far."
A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.
However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh season."
He added: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
The Scottish actor called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.
Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."
"Delighted with the news and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."
The drama launched in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.
Broadcasters has not yet announced when the upcoming series will hit screens.
The conclusion of season six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.
Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
