At least 64 people died in a law enforcement action targeting the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the region's records.
Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the security mission in the neighborhoods of AlemĂŁo and Penha, state officials stated. In excess of 80 people were detained.
Intense confrontations commenced when approximately 2,500 security personnel moved in on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization reacted using shooting, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives said.

Rio's police reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were captured in the raid, in addition to dozens of firearms.
The combined action by different law enforcement agencies follows a year-long investigation.
