Pizza Market Saturation? Domino's Pizza Chief Executive Departs Following Move Towards Fried Chicken.

A chief executive of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who suggested the United Kingdom might have hit maximum pizza demand while broadening the chain into poultry items has been replaced after tensions with its governing body.

Leadership Transition

Rennie is leaving after just two years in charge, and will be replaced on an temporary basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Nicola Frampton, while Domino's searches for a long-term chief.

The outgoing executive, who was with the company for a substantial period, had sought to shift the UK's largest pizza delivery company towards poultry-based products, remarking earlier this month there was not “significant expansion” left in the British pizza industry. He said poultry was the fastest-growing menu item in the world.

Board Tensions

Reports indicate that there was friction between the CEO and the directors over his focus and business vision, although Domino's official statement said he was leaving “by mutual agreement”.

Recent Product Introduction

In the autumn, the chain unveiled its poultry product line – which the former chief described as a “significant new phase” for the company – and is testing it in select stores in the north-west of England and the province.

While the business is still intending to launch it across its nearly 1,400 branches in 2026 as intended, it considers chicken products as complementary to its core pizza business.

Leadership Comment

Bull, the company chair, commented: “Directors think that there are a number of opportunities to boost expansion and performance improvement in our primary operations. We are focused on selecting the suitable leader to direct the systematic rollout of that expansion plan.”

Market Challenges

Earlier this month, the pizza delivery giant, which has a substantial customer base in the UK and Ireland, said sales declined by 1.5% in the Q3. In August, it alerted that the quick-service industry had “grown more challenging” as it attributed reduced spending in the period before the government announcement and higher payroll outlays for below-target performance and a 15% drop in half-year profits.

Other pizza operators are also facing challenges. Pizza Hut revealed the closure of dozens of outlets a month ago, after the firm behind its British operations entered insolvency.

Health Efforts

Trying to keep up with customer preferences towards better nutrition, Domino's has launched reduced-calorie items, such as its thin-crust range of bakes below 400 kcals as well as plant-based and allergy-friendly options. A family-sized pepperoni has over 2,300 kcal. A family cheese pizza has 2,171, while a individual has under 1,000 calories.

Interim Leadership

Frampton has been with the company since 2021, and previously worked for the betting firm a well-known operator. It is understood that she does not want to occupy the CEO position permanently.

She commented: “We have a several active expansion and operational projects that we will be dedicated to carrying out at a rapid rate.”

Frampton noted these involved further work on the company's supply chain and new item creation, and its rewards program.

Domino's is also without a full-time CFO until 16 March, when a new appointee comes aboard from the Irish cider and beer maker a well-known firm. Until then, Richard Snow is interim finance chief.
