The English golfer Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Playoff Battle Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic play-off after a topsy-turvy final round of play.

The Englishman sank a decisive birdie putt from just over eight feet to clinch the win, echoing his only previous Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off win over the same opponent.

Final Round Excitement

The champion entered the last day with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.

Fleetwood moved one shot clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the sixteenth, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last green.

Playoff Decider

That set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13 million) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even better person. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” stated the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and maintaining focus, it’s hard to put into words at the moment how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”

Other Contenders

The Northern Irish star found himself a bit too far to make up, finishing a stroke behind in a tie for third with the Dane, after a spectacular 62 closing round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever score on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and an eagle.

Højgaard fired six birdie putts of his as well, but his chances of topping the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell produced an superb final-round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
