Ultra-Conservative Ex- Legislator J.A. Kast Chosen as Chile's Incoming Leader.

Following a conclusive final ballot, ultra-conservative politician José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.

A Resounding Win

With more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, overcoming leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.

This represents Kast's third presidency, having previously been defeated by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Campaign Focused On Law and Order and Migration

Known for his staunch socially conservative views and admiration for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely focused on promises to tackle rising crime and significantly restrict immigration.

He repeatedly blamed migrants, especially the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the race, he gave an ultimatum for them to leave before the March 11 handover or face removal.

His plans featured Trump-inspired measures such as building camps, high walls, electric fences, and increasing the army presence on the northern frontier.

Part of a Broader Shift

Several observers see Kast's success as fitting into a wider right-wing shift in Latin America, similar to this year's political wins in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Nevertheless, other pundits further frame it as a extension of the regular alternation of power between left-wing and right administrations since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.

Governing Lacking a Strong Majority

Despite his clear electoral win, Kast will not hold an absolute majority in Congress, not in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even if all right-leaning parties are grouped together.

This legislative reality may complicate his plans, such as a vow to slash public spending by $6 billion within 18 months—a proposal for which he has not provided concrete steps.

"There are several things about how a Kast presidency will be that are uncertain because he has not detailed his methods for implement them," said a political science analyst.

The analyst continued, "Regarding economic policy, it is highly probable we will see austerity policies typical of the right. However the area with far less ambiguity is on security policy, because that has been his workhorse throughout the race."
